The Messa The Spin vinyl is the fourth full-length from one of Italy’s most distinctive heavy bands, released through Metal Blade Records under catalog number MBR 161761, and it finds the Bassano Del Grappa quartet operating with a confidence and ambition that demands attention.
Messa and the Road to The Spin
Messa formed in the Veneto region of Northern Italy and spent the better part of a decade building a reputation in the heavy underground on their own terms. Their self-described “Scarlet Doom” sound has never been easy to categorize: three albums across 2016, 2018 and 2022 (Belfry, Feast For Water and Close) absorbed doom metal as a foundation and bent it outward through jazz, blues, prog, punk, black metal and dark ambient, each record more assured than the last. By the time Close landed, the band had a devoted following and a critical reputation that outpaced their profile. The Spin, arriving in their tenth anniversary year, is where the wider world catches up.
What Makes The Spin Worth Your Time
The album was written in six concentrated weeks of daily sessions inside a 500-year-old villa near the band’s hometown, then recorded across three separate locations and timings, a deliberate structural decision that pushed the quartet to rebuild and rearrange material until it held together from first track to last. The result is seven songs ranging from Void Meridian through to Thicker Blood, built on a strict internal logic: if something repeats twice, that is enough. Three times, by their own rule, is boring. That discipline is audible throughout. The Spin also introduces a significant new element into Messa’s palette, a direct engagement with early 1980s gothic rock and dark wave. The band draws a careful distinction, pointing specifically toward the early period of the genre rather than its later, more theatrical forms. Reference points cited by Messa themselves include Killing Joke, Sisters Of Mercy, Virgin Prunes, Mercyful Fate, Jimmy Page, Journey, The Sound, Boy Harsher and Vangelis. That is a genuinely strange and interesting list, and the record sounds like it.
The Pressing
This is the standard LP pressing on Metal Blade Records, catalog MBR 161761. Metal Blade has been cutting vinyl consistently for decades and their releases hold up well in terms of pressing quality and packaging. For collectors who have followed Messa through the independent underground, having The Spin on wax is the natural way to own it. The record has real dynamic range and textural variety across its seven tracks, exactly the kind of material that rewards a proper listen through a decent stylus rather than a compressed stream. If you already have Close on vinyl, this belongs next to it.
