On their self-titled debut, four-piece outfit House of Artifacts weave together the sounds of 70s progressive rock, Latin music, and psychedelia. Instrumental opener “Strange Artifacts” serves as a danceable overture that introduces musical motifs that appear throughout the album. The darker “Larks of Conquest” spins a tale of a village burning amid ambient guitars and Mellotron flutes, while “Waterfall” offers a calm bossa nova respite. On “Grand Stage Departure,” a western inspired instrumental serves as the backdrop for a speaker grappling with an evolving sense of self. The album’s lead single, “Fire on the Mountain,” opens side B with a frantic first half contrasted with a contemplative ending, reflecting on the pursuit of perfection and the price of ambition. Finally, the album’s finale: “The Boy of Bengal.” Inspired by the true story of an 18th century boy with two heads, this ambitious composition incorporates both lyrical and musical motifs from throughout the album.
