The Lungfish Rainbows From Atoms vinyl is a reissue of the Baltimore band’s second full-length, originally released in 1993 on Dischord Records, and it has been out of print long enough that finding a clean original copy has become a genuine project.
Lungfish and the Dischord Underground
Lungfish formed in Baltimore and operated at a remove from most of what surrounded them, even within the Dischord catalog. Daniel Higgs, Asa Osborne, Mitchell Feldstein, and Nathan Bell built a sound that drew on repetition and trance as much as on post-hardcore energy. Their records accumulated a devoted following precisely because the band never chased trends or compromised toward a wider audience. Dischord, the Washington D.C. label co-founded by Ian MacKaye, gave them the space to do exactly what they wanted, and Rainbows From Atoms is where that identity started to fully solidify.
About the Album and Its Recording
Recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, Rainbows From Atoms was produced with Ian MacKaye and engineer Don Zientara, two figures whose fingerprints are all over the most important independent records of that era. Inner Ear was the room where a significant portion of the Dischord catalog was captured, and the combination of that space, those engineers, and this particular band at this particular moment produced something that held up well enough to warrant a proper reissue decades later. The album carries catalog number DIS 78 and sits in the core of the Dischord discography rather than at its margins.
Why Collectors Want This Lungfish Rainbows From Atoms Vinyl
The short version: this record has been out of print for years, originals in good condition are not easy to source, and Dischord does not reissue casually. When they bring something back, they treat it seriously. This pressing has been remastered for vinyl by TJ Lipple, which matters. Lipple has done extensive work with the Dischord archive and understands how these recordings are supposed to translate to the format. The remaster is not a cosmetic gesture. For anyone who has been listening on a rip or waiting for a reasonable copy to surface, this reissue is the practical and sonic answer. For collectors building out a Dischord run or a Lungfish-specific shelf, this is the version to own going forward.
