Lungfish formed in Baltimore and operated at a remove from most of what surrounded them, even within the Dischord catalog. Daniel Higgs, Asa Osborne, Mitchell Feldstein, and Nathan Bell built a sound that drew on repetition and trance as much as on post-hardcore energy. Their records accumulated a devoted following precisely because the band never chased trends or compromised toward a wider audience. Recorded at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, Virginia, Rainbows From Atoms was produced with Ian MacKaye and engineer Don Zientara, two figures whose fingerprints are all over the most important independent records of that era. Inner Ear was the room where a significant portion of the Dischord catalog was captured, and the combination of that space, those engineers, and this particular band at this particular moment produced something that held up well enough to warrant a proper reissue decades later. The album carries catalog number DIS 78 and sits in the core of the Dischord discography rather than at its margins.
