Michael Jackson – Dangerous (Pic)

$53.00

Eighth studio album by Michael Jackson. It was released on November 26, 1991 by Epic Records. His first album under his new contract with Sony Music, it was also Jackson’s first album since 1975’s Forever, Michael not to be produced by longtime collaborator Quincy Jones, who had agreed to split after the final recording sessions for Jackson’s 1987 album, Bad. Dangerous has sold over 35 million copies worldwide, 7 million albums were shipped in the United States alone, and has been cited as one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album produced four Top Ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100 including one number-one. Similar to the musician’s previous material, the album’s music features elements of R&B, pop and rock while also incorporating a newer genre, new jack swing, after the inclusion of producer Teddy Riley to the project in a bid to present Jackson to a younger urban audience. Jackson earned writing credits on all but two tracks on the album. Dangerous received several Grammy nominations, winning only one for Best Engineered Album. In addition to commercial success, the album received critical acclaim from contemporary critics.

Michael Jackson – Dangerous (Pic) is the picture disc edition of his eighth studio album, pressed on the Legacy label with catalog number 19075866441, and it is one of the more visually distinctive ways to own one of the best-selling albums in recorded music history.

The Record That Marked a New Direction

Released on November 26, 1991 through Epic Records, Dangerous was Jackson’s first album under his new Sony Music contract and the first since 1975’s Forever, Michael not to involve producer Quincy Jones. That split marked a genuine turning point. Rather than continue the Thriller and Bad blueprint, Jackson brought in Teddy Riley, one of the architects of new jack swing, to help reposition him with a younger urban audience. The result is an album that sits at a crossroads: it carries the R&B, pop and rock foundations of his earlier work while absorbing a harder, rhythmically driven production style that was very much of its moment. Jackson held writing credits on eleven of the thirteen tracks, and the album generated four Top Ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including one number one. It went on to sell over 35 million copies worldwide, with seven million units shipped in the United States alone. The Grammy nominations were numerous, with a win for Best Engineered Album acknowledging the meticulous craft behind the recording.

Michael Jackson – Dangerous (Pic): Format and Pressing Details

This is the picture disc LP format, released on the Legacy label. Picture discs occupy a specific niche in vinyl collecting: they trade a small amount of audio fidelity for a visual presentation that standard black vinyl simply cannot offer. For an album as image-conscious and visually loaded as Dangerous, the format is a reasonable trade. The catalog number is 19075866441. The double LP layout spreads the fourteen tracks evenly across two sides, which keeps the sequencing intact and the playing time per side manageable. Side one opens with Jam and closes with Can’t Let Her Get Away. Side two of the first disc ends with Heal the World. The second record moves through Black or White, Who Is It, Give In to Me and Will You Be There before closing the album on the title track.

Why This Copy Belongs in Your Collection

If you already own a standard pressing of Dangerous and want a display-worthy companion, this is the obvious candidate. Picture discs on a release of this profile tend to be produced in more limited quantities than standard black vinyl editions, and Legacy catalog reissues on this format do not always stay in continuous production. The album itself represents a documented commercial and critical milestone in early 1990s pop, and the new jack swing production courtesy of Teddy Riley gives it a period specificity that makes it genuinely interesting to revisit as a document of where mainstream Black music was heading at the start of that decade.
