Built on restlessness and distortion, Wildhoney simultaneously channel their own anxieties and the influence of Creation and Slumberland Records artists. “Like Me” whirls into frame with reverse-delayed guitar as vocalist Sophie Walter details a manipulative story of idolatry. The band drop back to a tender clean melody on “My Disguise,” allowing the guitar/bass interplay between Joe Trainor, David Litz and Alan Everhart’s strings to build carefully under a seemingly-sweet verse before drums and and an eventual blast-of-noise chorus kick in. Closer “Super Stupid” increases the extremes of the soft-loud balance by juxtaposing clean, twangy guitars with shrieking feedback and Zach Inscho’s crashing percussion. Embracing noisy pop without obnoxiously imitating genre heralds, Wildhoney is the sound of frustration put through a filter of catchy, woozy fuzziness.
