WHAT IS IT: THE FIRST RUMBLINGS OF PUNK ROCK IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1977-1983. Chris Ashford, creator of What? Records, helped pioneer the DIY punk spirit in Los Angeles. In July of 1977 Chris released the very first punk rock record in the fledgling scene, appropriately titled “Forming” by the already notorious Germs led by his friends Darby Crash and Pat Smear. This compilation brings together a sampling of Chris’ work documenting the early era of punk in Southern California, especially in its first year.
