The first record to feature bassist Dominic “Rocky” Laroche, who replaced the departed original bassist Jean-Yves “Blacky” Thériault after the previous album ‘Target Earth’s release. It has been almost universally hailed as the best post-Piggy Voivod album, and even as a sort of “return to form” to their legendary output of the ’80s. Building on the momentum of their revitalized lineup, ‘The Wake’ sees Voivod weaving together their signature elements – jagged thrash riffing, angular time shifts, and cosmic storytelling – into a dense, cinematic experience. The album expands their trademark sci-fi mythology while exploring themes of consciousness, apocalypse, and rebirth, delivered through intricate musicianship and Michel “Away” Langevin’s surreal visual and lyrical concepts.
