Double picture disc release, with 8 page booklet. ‘The Wake’ is the fourteenth studio album by Canadian technical/prog thrash band Voivod, originally released in 2018 by Century Media Records. The first record to feature bassist Dominic “Rocky” Laroche, who replaced the departed original hailed as the best post-Piggy Voivod album, and even as a sort of “return to form” to their legendary output of the ’80s. Building on the momentum of their revitalized lineup, ‘The Wake’ sees Voivod weaving together their signature elements – jagged thrash riffing, angular time shifts, and cosmic storytelling – into a dense, cinematic experience. The album expands their trademark sci-fi mythology while exploring themes of consciousness, apocalypse, and rebirth, delivered through intricate musicianship and Michel “Away” Langevin’s surreal visual and lyrical concepts. Far from a mere nostalgia exercise, ‘The Wake’ demonstrates Voivod’s ongoing evolution, bridging their classic sound with a renewed creative spark that feels both familiar and forward-thinking.
