ShaNaNa’ was a New
York-based Doo-wop group from 1969. Their sound worked in the
seventies, but fifty years later we can all agree that it’s time to
speed up the music and severely alter the vocals! Thus, PIG Records
decided to move the ‘S’ at the beginning of ShaNaNa to the end, where
‘S’es belong, and lose the ‘H’ at the same time. Ingenious!
‘ANANAS!’ The latest hardcore-core punk band from Osaka, Japan have no
Doo-wop in their music. Instead, Frontwoman Karina Friday provides a
kick-ass full-throttle style of vocals that explodes from her lips. Her
live performance is filled with aggression. Three men, who are the
musical equivalent of a Samurais round out the band. Jun is picking a
guitar. Awaji is humming on bass, and Kazu is beating the living s***
out of the drums.
This well packaged seven-inch vinyl EP is not the only Ananas release
on the market. In 2021, when the band signed to PIG Records they
released a split EP with the Gods of Punk, Italy’s own Raw Power. They
have since gained a following not only in Japan, but also in Italy and
the United States, and more recently are starting to get a groove on in
Indonesia.
Don’t add a ‘B’ in front of their name to pretend its Bananas. Nope,
bad idea. If you’re going to attach a fruit to their name, remember
these are the type of warriors who like pineapple on their pizza.
