Bruno Mars – 24k Magic

$37.99

24K Magic is the third studio album by the American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars. It was released by Atlantic Records on November 18, 2016. Mars reunited with Philip Lawrence and Christopher Brody Brown, who composed the album under their joint alias Shampoo Press & Curl. Mars enlisted new composers including the Stereotypes and James Fauntleroy. Recording sessions for 24K Magic took place between late 2015 and September 2016 at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. Several critics said 24K Magic was crafted from elements of R&B, funk, pop, and new jack swing. Mars was inspired to create an album on which he could capture the sound of 1990s R&B, that he listened and danced to during his childhood. He wanted to make people dance and have the same enjoyment he had. Includes digital download.

Bruno Mars 24K Magic vinyl brings one of the more carefully constructed pop records of the mid-2010s to your turntable, released by Atlantic Records on November 18, 2016, and catalogued here as ATL 558305.

Bruno Mars and the Making of 24K Magic

Bruno Mars is a Honolulu-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who built his reputation on meticulous musicianship and a deep literacy in Black American pop music. By the time he started work on this album, he had already demonstrated a facility for moving between genres with precision rather than pastiche. For 24K Magic, he reunited with longtime collaborators Philip Lawrence and Christopher Brody Brown, working under their joint alias Shampoo Press & Curl, and brought in additional writers including the Stereotypes and James Fauntleroy. Recording took place between late 2015 and September 2016 at Glenwood Place Studios in Burbank, California. The stated ambition was direct: Mars wanted to recreate the sound of 1990s R&B that he grew up listening and dancing to, and he wanted listeners to feel exactly that same physical pull. Critics largely agreed he landed it, describing the album as a focused exercise in R&B, funk, pop, and new jack swing.

What Makes This Bruno Mars 24K Magic Vinyl Worth Owning

This is the Atlantic Records LP pressing carrying catalog number ATL 558305. For a record so rooted in the sonic pleasures of a specific era, there is a real argument for hearing it on vinyl. The low-end weight of funk-oriented production, the placement of horns, the compression choices that define that 90s R&B aesthetic, all of that translates differently through a needle than through a streaming platform or a CD player. Mars and his collaborators were thinking carefully about groove and feel at every stage of this record, and the format rewards that attention. The album also includes a digital download card, so you are not choosing between formats when you buy it.

Who Should Pick This Up

If you collect broadly across pop and R&B, or if you have been building out a section dedicated to Atlantic releases from this decade, ATL 558305 fits neatly into either context. It also makes sense for anyone who came to Mars through his earlier work and wants the full studio catalog on wax. This is not a reissue or a special edition with extra weight or colored vinyl, but it is a clean standard pressing of a record that was designed with real care, from a label that has been pressing quality pop and soul records for decades.
