Multi-regional garage rock supergroup! Mal Thursday Quintet’s second album, recorded with the Texas, New England, and Northwest chapters between 2017 and 2025. Mal and his regular songwriting collaborators Dave Berkham (The Reverberations) and Bob Medley (The Malarians) have delivered a batch of top-notch originals, with a few well-chosen remakes for added flavor. Special guests include Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson Band, M-Squad, et al.) from Los Angeles, Austin guitarslinger Jamey Simms, and from Boston, David Champagne and Jim Fitting, who recreated their parts on Treat Her Right’s “Picture of the Future.” Of the dozen tracks on the album, three – “A Smell of Honey, A Swallow of Brine!,” “The Defilers,” and “Kitten with a Whip” – are representative of the Quintet’s sub-specialty, which is writing original theme songs to ’60s movies that didn’t originally have theme songs. A worthy follow-up to Mal Thursday Quintet’s 2021 IF 6 WAS 5 album, MODS & GODS is a remarkably cohesive collection, given that it was recorded in nine different studios in three different states over the course of eight and a half years.
